London-based architecture and design firm JaK Studio recently revealed its plans for modular cabins that can be customized just like a Minecraft game. Dubbed HOM3, the cabins are meant to provide additional private spaces for homeowners. They can be used as art studios, sheds, beach shacks, and minimal outdoor retreats. They’re also a great way to create a quiet home office space for the many people who have transitioned to working from home permanently.
You can easily configure the shape and size of the cabin much like you would in the video game Minecraft. “Being a gamer, I have watched my friends build endless homes with Minecraft in downtime during lockdown. It dawned on me that this way of creating virtual architecture could be a great way for people to create a truly flexible and adaptable piece of micro-architecture for themselves,” said Nedzad Sahovic, creative director of JaK Studio.
In addition to the size and shape of the cabin, customers can tailor its finishes, fittings, and furniture to their needs. Features like sleep pods can be paired with spaces like workstations or home offices, depending on how it will be used. The foundation can even be adjusted so that the cabin can function as a glam treehouse, and it can easily be mounted on a trailer and taken on vacation.
“There has been a growing trend in recent years for garden sheds and outhouses that can be used flexibly as work or leisure spaces, and the pandemic has only accelerated this,” said JaK Studio director Jacob Low. “During lockdown, our team became fascinated by the principles of games such as Minecraft, which allow people to transform and customize their environments, and we began experimenting with the idea of customizable, modular micro-architecture. HOM3 transports what we found in the gaming world to the physical space, offering a really unique design solution for modern living.”
Not only are the cabins highly innovative and customizable, but they’re also 100% sustainable. Each cabin is made from sustainable materials sourced from Bosnian forests. Even better, proceeds from every purchase are sent to art, environmental, or social causes. And customers get to choose which of these causes they contribute to, ranging from protecting the woodlands to providing supplies to refugee camps.
The units start at around $50,000 and can be purchased for preorder now.
