Established in the 1920s, Airstream is a pioneer of mobile living. The company has long specialized in designing trailers that combine style and comfort with the ability to move your living space from point A to point B. And Airstream has evolved quite a bit over the decades, designing a wide range of camper trailers for virtually every need, including its latest offering: the Airstream eStream.
Traditionally, trailers rely on onboard batteries or campground shore power to run, but the eStream comes with its own high-voltage electric chassis that allows it to carry much of its own load and run, in part, on its own. This feature reduces the trailer's load on the towing vehicle, thereby increasing fuel efficiency, aka potentially saving you some serious gas cash on cross-country road trips.
According to Josef Hjelmaker, the chief innovation officer for Thor Industries, which owns Airstream: "The technology we co-developed creates a synchronized relationship between the trailer and the tow vehicle, enabling the trailer to move in harmony with the tow vehicle, reducing the pulling effect required from the tow vehicle. This, in turn, dramatically improves the possible range of the combination. In essence, we've turned the trailer into an electric vehicle. The technology is game-changing for our industry and others."
In addition to increasing your fuel efficiency, the eStream's electric drivetrain allows for remote-control parking. In other words, you can use a remote to line up the trailer for parking, hitching, and other easy positioning rather than needing to maneuver it from within your car.
The eStream also comes with a 900-watt solar power system for an extra energy boost, including five 180-watt solar panels mounted right on the roof. Meanwhile, sophisticated features like touchscreens, voice control, and 5G connectivity allow for an on-grid living experience even when you're nowhere near shore power. You can even charge it at virtually any EV charging system, which are likely to become increasingly pervasive at campgrounds as more and more of us move toward eco-friendly vehicles.
The eStream is still in its conception stage, so it's not yet up for sale, but you can sign up here to be the first to know when it's released.
