This Foldable Cabin Could be Delivered by Drone

San Francisco design studio SFSO created a concept for a drone-delivered cabin that reimagines the future of camping. Simply dubbed Mobile Cabin, the design would allow people to explore and stay in some of the world’s most remote locations while making zero impact on the surrounding environment.

Rather than hitch this cabin on a trailer and head out to your camping destination, you could book the cabin on an app and have it delivered by drone. SFSO proposes that long as there’s a droneport within 500 miles of your intended location, then a drone would deliver the cabin straight to you. And if there isn’t a droneport available, you could book an airship delivery.

The cabin could be transported this way thanks to its innovative design. Made of plastic and wood, the foldable cabin would span about seven by five feet once constructed, and easily collapse and expand depending on your needs at the moment. When it arrives at your location by drone, you’d be responsible for setting it up. Sound difficult? Well, it turns out that the cabin’s design is intended to make it easier to set up than a tent, so most people would have no trouble getting it up and running.

And, unlike a tent, it would be fully integrated with all kinds of features to make your stay more comfortable, including a water tank in the lower frame, a battery pack for electricity, a tank for food waste, and a utility container. If SFSO’s concept comes to fruition, you wouldn’t even have to think about food—ready-to-eat meals would be delivered to you by drone at regular intervals.

And once you’re ready to pack up and head out, all you’d need to do is collapse the cabin and order a drone to come pick it up, leaving no trace of its existence.

This Jetson’s-esque concept would promote non-invasive tourism while putting a highly futuristic spin on what it means to camp off the grid. It would also allow campers to explore and stay in highly remote areas that would otherwise be out of reach.

Before these cabins could become a reality, there’d need to be a drone and airship infrastructure in place, but when it comes to innovative design, if there’s a will, there’s almost always a way.
